UNC Faculty Symposium on Deliberative Pedagogy
On May 6th, 2021, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the UNC Program for Public Discourse (PPD) hosts the UNC Faculty Symposium on Deliberative Pedagogy. All UNC faculty and staff are invited to attend.
The PPD aims to foster dialogue and debate at UNC, with the goal of increasing students’ capacities to be active participants in democratic processes. To that end, and to help faculty share ideas and refine their skills for fostering dialogue and debate, the PPD is hosting an array of panels and discussions on deliberative pedagogy.

For the first time, researchers have been able to obtain data from underneath Thwaites Glacier, also known as the Doomsday Glacier . They find that the supply of warm water to the glacier is larger than previously thought, triggering concerns of faster melting and accelerating ice flow.
With the help of the uncrewed submarine Ran that made its way under Thwaites glacier front, the researchers have made a number of new discoveries. Professor Karen Heywood of the University of East Anglia commented: This was Ran s first venture to polar regions and her exploration of the waters under the ice shelf was much more successful than we had dared to hope. We plan to build on these exciting findings with further missions under the ice next year.

I point you toward further resources for improving syllabi.
I pass along an interesting Twitter thread on students’ learning-related fears about returning to the classroom.
A Welcoming Syllabus
A couple of weeks ago,
I wrote about new research showing that writing a syllabus in a warm tone could encourage students to ask for help, and asked readers how they have made their syllabi inviting.
I received a number of interesting responses. One common theme: The words used on the syllabus definitely matter, but so does the visual presentation.
Liz Norell, an associate professor of political science at Chattanooga State Community College, summed up her approach by writing, “I’ve worked really hard to adapt my syllabus into a document that’s readable, user-friendly, and supportive.”

But my turning point came in January 2020 at the age of 28.
I was at my heaviest weight of 213 pounds on my 5’6” frame. One evening, I was playing with my son and became so out of breath that I thought I was going to have a heart attack. At that point, I realized that if I wanted to be around to see my boy grow up, I needed to stop throwing myself a pity party and start prioritizing my health again.
