Bill seeks to ban transgender athletes from women’s sports in Florida
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A wide-ranging education bill that includes a controversial provision to ban transgender female athletes from competing on high-school girls’ and college women’s sports teams was formally sent to Gov. Ron DeSantis Friday.
The measure (SB 1028) seeks to make female athletes’ eligibility for sports teams contingent on their “biological sex” on birth certificates issued “at or near the time of the student’s birth.”
House Republicans attached the transgender athlete ban to the sweeping education bill in the waning days of the legislative session that wrapped on April 30, after the controversial proposal had stalled in the Senate as a stand-alone measure.

LAKELAND – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis came to Lakeland on Friday morning to stand inside a cavernous building filled with towering, orange shelves holding absolutely nothing.
In the near future, DeSantis said, he expects those shelves to be loaded with pharmaceutical supplies and the LifeScience Logistics distribution center to be thrumming with activity.
DeSantis held a news conference at the newly constructed warehouse to press the Biden Administration for approval of a drug-importation program created through Florida laws enacted in 2019. He said the state only needs federal permission to begin importing prescription drugs from Canada, a change he said could save Floridians more than $100 million a year on drug costs.
