  TORONTO Indigenous groups from across the country held grieving ceremonies on Wednesday to remember the nearly 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada. May 5 in Canada and the U.S. marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), which coincides with “Red Dress Day.” “This day was started over 11 years ago by Jaime Black, who is a Metis artist, and she wanted to do a public display of red dresses to raise awareness,” Lynne Groulx, CEO of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, told CTV News. According to the RCMP, there are nearly 1,200 missing and murdered Indigenous woman and girls in Canada, though it’s believed the number could be much higher.

  KITCHENER A Kitchener-based organization is joining with others across the nation to help raise awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. The Healing of the Seven Generations held a Red Dress Day gathering on Wednesday at their headquarters on Frederick Street. The gathering featured drumming, sharing of the medicine, an honouring ceremony, and dozens of red dresses on display meant to bring awareness to a pressing issue. “This is something that hits our communities hard,” said Kelly Welch, cultural program coordinator with the organization. “It’s something that pretty much affects every member of our community. “This is a day that brings awareness, but every day we want to remember.”

Falmouth teens charged in the brutal beating of Franklin boy FALMOUTH Two Falmouth teens face assault and battery charges after a 17-year-old Franklin boy was kicked and beaten until he was unconscious during a party in August. The injured boy, who was visiting Falmouth, suffered a concussion and two fractures in his jaw on Aug. 15. His father brought him to Falmouth Hospital, and he was later admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital for possible brain bleeding, according to a redacted copy of the incident s police report.  The accused teens, one 16 the other 17, are both charged with assault and battery with serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and simple assault and battery in Falmouth Juvenile Court. One of the teens had a pretrial hearing on Dec. 11 and the other had a pretrial hearing on Jan. 8.
