Experts: Tennessee federal law doesn t block COVID vaccine incentives

They said that failing to identify the known risks and benefits of the vaccine, failing to provide an option to refuse or identifying alternatives could be a violation.  To anyone bullying, bribing, shaming, coercing, or cajoling an individual into taking the vaccine, I strongly urge you to consult with your legal counsel for potential violations of federal law, the lawmakers said.  But legal experts say that section of the law doesn t apply to efforts to encourage vaccination and doesn t limit private businesses or state governments from acting. There are few or no legal barriers to employers or schools requiring vaccines being distributed, said health policy expert Tony Yang, executive director of the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University. There s no legal or scientific argument for it.

GOP lawmakers met with TN officials about ending vaccine outreach

In the days before Tennessee stopped encouraging teenagers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus, Republican lawmakers met privately with the state health commissioner and a representative of the governor’s office to discuss specifically how to dial back vaccination advocacy to minors. Those same lawmakers on Wednesday shut down opposition comments from Democrats and the public in a highly-anticipated hearing. This behind-the-scenes meeting appears to have appeased members of the conservative supermajority, who just last month accused the Department of Health of pressuring teens to get vaccinated and proposed dissolving the agency. Since then, the health department instructed staff to end all outreach about adolescent vaccinations – not just coronavirus, but for all diseases – and cancelled COVID-19 vaccination events on school property or intended specifically for teenagers.
