I feel the need to call particular attention to what we re seeing, which is the first majority person of color committee in our town where, if I m counting right, five out of six of those people of color will not be continuing the work, Nicoll said. I hope this forces our town to reckon with its past, its present, what we re doing. I know it s calling me to reckon with my work in this committee, and I hope to God it s calling leadership in this town to reckon with what has happened and where we need to go. I don t want to hear excuses from people about why this is happening. I think it is clear, and we ve got to stop hiding from it.
The Select Board last summer created what became the Diversity, Inclusion and Racial Equity Committee as an advisory panel. Members of that panel this week questioned why the Select Board has not appeared willing to consider the advice the DIRE Committee has provided. I actually don t care how the Select Board feels about the resolutions, Aruna D Souza said. But if they re saying they re recommendations, so [they] don t have to act on them, it seems to me that, procedurally, there should be a point at which they decide, We don t have to act on them, and that should take place at an open meeting.
WILLIAMSTOWN â In light of ongoing tensions among members and with the community, the Select Board on Friday will engage in a training session to learn how to more effectively communicate.
Kerri Nicoll, an associate professor of sociology, anthropology and social work at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, will serve as moderator for the three-hour retreat via Zoom.
âThe hope is that members of the Select Board, as town leaders, can think of different ways to interact with the public,â Nicoll told The Eagle on Tuesday. âAnd this is not unique to Williamstown. This kind of discord between leadership and the public is going on all over, with many people recognizing that we need to be more inclusive than in the past.â
Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts professor of social work Kerri Nicoll suggested that the board could benefit from training in light of the twin strains of a controversy that has engulfed the town over the last year and a pandemic that has forced a new mode of conducting meetings in a virtual environment. I would be willing to work to plan and facilitate a training/retreat of some kind that would give you all an opportunity to collectively think about your roles as Select Board members, particularly in light of new levels of civic participation, Nicoll said. This is acknowledging the fact that this is not unique to Williamstown. I think a lot of elected bodies and public officials are rethinking how they interact with the public because the public is more engaged at every moment, in part because it is wonderfully more convenient for people to engage from their own home.
