Sangamon County’s public health director says it’s likely that COVID-19 variants are in the community, even though there have not been any direct confirmed cases in county residents.
Gail O’Neill says random sampling conducted locally indicates the presence of COVID variants, which can be more contagious. O’Neill says overall she remains concerned about recent increases in local COVID cases and hospitalizations.
27-percent of Sangamon County residents are now fully vaccinated against the virus, but O’Neill says interest in the vaccine seems to have waned somewhat, and she’s encouraging unvaccinated people to take advantage of available appointments.
