US: New Jones Act compliant offshore wind vessel on the horizon

US: New Jones Act compliant offshore wind vessel on the horizon December 17, 2020, by Adrijana Buljan Lloyd’s Register North America and Northeast Technical Services Co. (NETSCo) have joined forces to design and develop a Jones Act compliant wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV). “The offshore wind industry is expected to see exponential growth in the United States. There are currently no U.S.-built wind turbine installation vessels, and if the sector takes off as expected, there will be a pressing requirement for such vessels”, said Rafael Riva, LR’s Americas Marine & Offshore Commercial Manager. The two companies have signed an agreement for a joint development project, under which NETSCo’s engineers and naval architects will be responsible for the vessel’s concept design, taking into account the requirements of the offshore wind developments along the U.S. East Coast and the U.S. Great Lakes, such as crane capaci

Dominion lays keel for Jones Act jack-up - reNews - Renewable Energy News

The utility said the milestone took place at the Keppel AmFELS yard in Brownsville, Texas. Steel was supplied domestically, Dominion said, adding the vessel is of strategic importance to its future business. The developer said it expects to have the vessel, which was designed by GustoMSC and can tackle turbines of 12MW and larger, active from 2027. It will also be equipped for foundation installation and will cost $500m. Once constructed, the installation ship will be available for charter hire, including by Dominion, subject to the approval of the Virginia State Corporation Commission.  UK vessel operator Seajacks will assist Dominion with construction and operations oversight.

(Photo: Dominion Energy) Shipbuilder Keppel AmFELS has laid the keel for the first ever Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) at its shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, marking a key milestone for the development of the U.S. offshore wind industry. With several gigawatts of offshore wind capacity to be installed along the U.S. East Coast in the next decade, access to Jones Act compliant WTIVs is of strategic importance to the U.S. offshore wind market. Currently no such vessel exists.  Dominion Energy contracted with Keppel AmFELS, a wholly-owned U.S. subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, for the engineering, procurement and construction of the vessel, which is designed by NOV business unit GustoMSC.

Keel laid for ship that will install offshore wind turbines

Keel laid for ship that will install offshore wind turbines December 16, 2020 GMT Dominion Energy says the keel has been laid for an offshore wind turbine installation vessel that is part of its project to create what it says will be the largest offshore wind farm in the U.S. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Dominion made the announcement on Wednesday. The wind farm will be 27 miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. Dominion CEO Bob Blue said the wind farm is expected to provide 650,000 customers with zero-carbon electricity at its peak output. ADVERTISEMENT Gov. Ralph Northam said the vessel “will make the offshore wind industry possible in Virginia.” He said that’s because it will be big enough and strong enough to transport and install the foundations of turbines at the offshore site.
