SEACC plans to chime in at Kensington tailings dam meeting

SEACC Staff Scientist Guy Archibald Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Representatives of the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council will be among those participating in the public meeting hosted by the Forest Service this evening on the proposal to expand the tailings disposal area at the Kensington Mine. SEACC s Staff Scientist Guy Archibald said on Action Line said they are prepared to outline their concerns. One is that the dam already will require maintenance forever since it s been subjected to incremental permitting every ten years rather than considering the impacts of mine s entire life. In addition, he says the plan lacks any consideration of the impact of climate change. He pointed to the recent onslaught of torrential rains and resulting mudslides.

Hearing on Kensington Mine s tailings disposal proposal subject of public hearing

Operations at the Kensington Mine Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Alaska Region of the U. S. Forest Service is hosting a virtual public hearing Thursday evening regarding the request by the Kensington Mine to expand its tailings disposal area. James King is the agency s Recreation, Lands and Minerals Director. He said the hearing is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. He said information is available at www.kensingtonseis.com King says they re working to extend the public comment period. December 14 is the deadline for now and we re working hard to extend that to January 4. I encourage people to put their comments in before the 14th just in case we don t get approval to extend it.
