FRANKFORT, Ky. â Kentucky has launched a statewide project to replace thousands of roadway lighting fixtures with energy-saving LED lights.
The upgrades will reduce energy consumption of roadway lighting systems by more than 50% and save more than $2.8 million a year in utility and maintenance costs, according to a news release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
âModernizing our roadway lights with more efficient and longer-lasting LEDs is a win-win strategy to stretch taxpayer dollars, improve roadway visibility and reduce the number of maintenance-related lane closures,â Kentuckyâs Transportation Secretary Jim Gray said Monday in a news release.
More than 18,000 lighting fixtures will be replaced with energy-efficient LED lights on some state-maintained roads across Kentucky, officials said. The project includes replacing underground lighting in the Cochrane Tunnel in Jefferson County and the Cumberland Gap Tunnel in Bell County.

New Life Church in Ferguson offers to open its doors as a warming center for those with no place to go when the weather drops below 32 degrees, or freezing. Christopher Harris
With a decent amount of snow and worse, bitter temperatures expected this week for Christmas, it s notable that not everyone will be able to stay home (and warm) for the holiday.
For those who find themselves without an indoors to retreat to when it s cold, New Life Church in Ferguson is ready to open their doors.
It s not just this week â the church has a policy. Any time the temperatures drop to 32 degrees or colder, the church on Murphy Avenue opens their gymnasium as a warming center for anyone who needs it.
