In 2019, Kentucky distillers produced more than 1,7 million barrels of bourbon, nearly a four-fold increase from production levels a decade earlier. So it s no surprise that bourbon has experienced a two-decade boom which has no end in site.
And Kentucky, our neighbor to the north, is at the forefront: the state produces 95% of the world s bourbon supply, according to the Kentucky Distillers Association. Another interesting fact: distilled spirit sales increased 55% after the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The 50% EU tariff hike on American whiskey that was set to come into play on 1 June has been suspended
In a joint statement yesterday (17 May), representatives from the EU and US said they were beginning talks to address the trade conflicts over the global steel and aluminium industry that have resulted in tariffs on American whiskey, among other products.
As part of these discussions, they agreed to halt the 50% tariff on American whiskey that would have come into effect on 1 June.
We’ve all grown accustomed to our favorite whiskeys going on allocation when there’s not enough to go around, thanks to the continued popularity of the drink we know and love. The fact that standbys we used to be able to grab at the corner spirits shop for $25 are now elusive bottles costing double or more is part of the price we pay for the booming industry, and I chalk it up to everyone else getting on the bourbon bandwagon.
But it turns out there’s another factor in the mix these days that can make it harder to get our hands on the whiskeys we love the pandemic. Thanks, COVID-19.
