Date Time Two men wanted on outstanding warrants at Walgett Police are appealing for public assistance to locate two men wanted on outstanding warrants in the state’s north. Kenneth Morgan, aged 21, and James Fernando also known as James Morgan, aged 22, are both wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for the offence of wounding with intent to murder. Investigators from Central North Police District have been conducting inquiries into their whereabouts and now are appealing for public assistance. Kenneth is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, of a thin build, with black hair and brown eyes. James is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, of a medium build, with black hair and brown eyes.

In partnership with Schneider Electric, the city of Covington’s pursuit to be more environmentally friendly could pay off handsomely in the long run. According to a study conducted by Schneider Electric, the city could save up to $1.5 million over the next 20 years by taking necessary steps to cut energy usage. Steps would include installing interior and exterior LED lighting, street lighting upgrades, smart controls for lighting, smart buildings and HVAC automation, water conservation and envelope/weatherization.

Using the remainder of 2011 SPLOST funds, the city of Covington has elected to pave 11 streets as part of a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) project. During its regular meeting Jan. 4, the Covington City Council unanimously approved the estimated $546,394.72 project. According to City Manager Scott Andrews, the Georgia Department of Transportation will contribute $168,968.32, leaving the city of Covington to pay the remaining $377,426.40. A 10% contingency was included to cover “any unforeseen issue that may arise during the paving process.”

The council also elected to table items that included discussion and a public hearing for to rezone property at 9155 Jackson Highway from NR2 (Neighborhood Residential District 2) to NR3 (Neighborhood Residential District 3) for “proposed future development;” discussion of requests for proposals for broker services for employee benefits; and discussion of the first reading of an ordinance amending the city’s “Electric Service Tariff.”

• Debra Lynn Vandergriff, 63, of Clift Rd., Soddy Daisy, was arrested on Dec. 8 by the Athens Police Department and charged with public intoxication. She was being held on $1,000 bond and faced a date in General Sessions Court on Dec. 9. • Andrew P. Ward, 44, of County Road 312, Sweetwater, was arrested on Dec. 9 by the McMinn County Sheriff’s Department and charged with three counts of failure to appear. He was released on $7,000 bond to Bradley County authorities and faces a date in General Sessions Court on Feb. 10, 2021. • Shane Lee Stevens, 47, of County Road 545, Englewood, was arrested on Dec. 9 by the Athens Police Department and charged with burglary, vandalism and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held on $12,000 bond and faced a date in General Sessions Court on Dec. 10.
