Local angler reels in more than $48K
Kenneth Nelson stopped at Fas Gas Plus on Van Horne Street in Cranbrook to buy ice-fishing bait, but ended up leaving with a lot more than worms after realizing the Lotto 6/49 ticket he’d purchased for the April 25, 2020 draw was worth exactly $48,258.70.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Nelson (pictured above) decided to check his tickets periodically, and only a few at a time.
“I had a few lottery tickets to scan,” Nelson recalled. “I pulled out two to validate. I won $1 from the first one I checked and the second one was the big winner!

Man dies in early-morning Interstate 81 crash in Wythe County
Crash happened as tractor-trailer tried to get onto I-77

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – State police are investigating a deadly crash that happened early Friday morning on Interstate 81.
At about 4:30 a.m. on the Exit 72 ramp toward I-77 North, a 2006 Kenworth tractor-trailer ran off the left side of the road, hit the guardrail and flipped over, according to state police.
The driver, Kenneth Nelson, 55, of Forest, Ohio, died at the scene.

The Wilmington Police Department s stabbing investigation from earlier this week has hit a roadblock.
Police responded to the 800 block of Colonial Drive in Wilmington just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after a 28-year-old man was knocking on doors asking for someone to call 911, according to a press release from the department.
The man, 28-year-old Garrett Lee Land, is expected to make a full recovery. However, Land has refused to cooperate with the police department due to the incident being drug-related, according to police.
Public Affairs Officer Jessica Williams said the department is actively investigating the drug transaction now. Due to the ongoing investigation additional details, including any potential charges that may be filed against Land or others, are not being released at this time.
A man checked into the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Thursday with a life-threatening injury.
Police received a report shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday that Kenneth Nelson, 21, checked into the hospital for treatment for a stabbing wound, according to a press release from the Wilmington Police Department.
Nelson is in critical condition. According to a news release, it is not known when or where the assault took place.
The department is asking those with information to call 910-323-3609 or submit an anonymous tip through the Wilmington, NC PD app.
