Green Bay Packers Head Coach has made a choice for his new Defensive Coordinator and it’s 50 year old Joe Barry.
Actually, it’s LaFleur’s second choice as he initially offered the job to 39 year old Jim Leonard, the Defensive Coordinator of the University of Wisconsin Badgers but Leonard turned down the offer following a pair of interviews to return to Madison where he has produced one of the top collegiate defenses in the nation over the past four years.
So it is Barry who will succeed Mike Pettine who’s contract was not renewed after a three year run in Green Bay under both Mike McCarthy and Lafluer for his first two years on the job. Barry and LaFleur were together on Sean McVay’s first coaching staff with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 when LaFleur was the offensive coordinator and Barry was the assistant Head Coach in charge on linebackers.

After two years of defensive play trending up statistically, Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFluer has changed course with his defense, declining to retain Mike Pettine as his coordinator and hiring Joe Barry who worked with LaFleur for one year on Sean McVayâs Los Angeles Rams staff in 2017.
Barry, 50, was among nine candidates considered by LaFleur and reportedly wasnât his first choice. University of Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonard was apparently offered the job after a pair of interviews but turned down the Packers to stay with his alma mater where heâs led the Badgers to top five defensive finishes in nearly every category during his four years of coordinating Wisconsinâs unit.

Has Coach LaFleur made any mention of the new DC and STC and their freedom with their staff hires? The more turnover in the whole staff there is, the longer is will take for the defense and special teams to jell I believe. A new coordinator may want his own coaches though to put his best stamp on the team, with a longer learning curve, but maybe a better result. Which way does the team appear to be leaning?

Having fallen one step short of reaching their first Super Bowl since the 2010-2011 season, the Green Bay Packers have suffered defeat two consecutive seasons in the NFC Championship Game. Last season was at the hands of a strong San Francisco 49ers team, and this season ended with a shocking defeat to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Things need to change in Titletown, especially if they want to keep filling up their trophy cases to justify their championship-themed moniker. Especially for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the window of being able to field a competitive team is closing quickly, so this team needs to figure things out, and fast.
