Maine Child Welfare Board members resign over frustration with DHHS

Maine Child Welfare Board members resign over frustration with DHHS WGME PORTLAND (WGME) – Two Maine Child Welfare Board members have resigned, saying DHHS is not listening to recommendations. They say the deaths of kids like Kendall Chick and Marissa Kennedy should have resulted in policy changes. Two longtime members of the Maine Child Welfare Board say these incidents should have been prevented. The Maine Child Welfare Ombudsman Board lost two of its five members Monday: James Allie McCormack and Ally Keppel. The volunteer board supports the state appointed role of the ombudsman. On paper, it s supposed to be a third-party observer of DHHS, recommending changes or improvements.

9 hours ago in Local Photo: 560 WGAN Newsradio AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Two members of the child welfare ombudsman’s board have resigned, citing concerns about child welfare practices and suggesting the Department of Health and Human Services isn’t receptive to oversight. Board members Ally Keppel and James “Allie” McCormack said their resignations last week stem from longstanding concerns that were underscored by the recent deaths of four children. “Another legislative session has gone by without any significant changes, and the newspaper articles reporting multiple child deaths involving some degree of DHHS involvement have arrived as feared,” they wrote. Four recent deaths include the fatal beating of 3-year-old Maddox Williams, in Stockton Springs. His mother is in jail, charged with murder.
