“Securing Indigenous guardianship of vital ecosystems”: Q&A with Nia Tero CEO Peter Seligmann
One of the dominant trends in conservation over the past 20 years has been growing recognition of the contributions Indigenous peoples have made toward conservationists’ goals of protecting biodiversity, wild places, and ecosystem functions.
This view is a departure from historical conservation approaches, which have tended to marginalize, undervalue, or even criminalize Indigenous peoples. The transition unfolding across conservation is an important development for the sector, but going from talking about change to actually implementing meaningful reforms will be a challenge.
For these reasons, Peter Seligmann – one of the best-known and most influential figures in conservation – is an important figure to watch. Alaskan Coalition Seeking Permanent Protections For Bristol Bay In the face of the Pebble Mine filing for an appeal, Alaskans are asking the EPA and Congress to permanently protect the Bristol Bay watershed SHARE
Since 2005, the people of Bristol Bay Alaska have been fighting to save one of the last great salmon runs on earth and prevent the Pebble Mine, a massive copper and gold mining operation, from being built within their watershed. And last November, they had a huge win. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied Pebble Limited Partnership (PLP) the permit to build the mine.
But PLP doesn’t seem to be deterred. They recently filed for an appeal to the ruling as did the state of Alaska. While these appeals are both under review, a coalition of business, tribal, nonprofit, and community organizations called the Bristol Bay Defense Fund is working to get permanent protections for the region and put the nearly two-decade-long fight to rest.

Feb 5 (Reuters) - Northern Dynasty Minerals Ltd said on Friday that its wholly-owned Pebble Limited Partnership and the unit’s former chief executive officer had been served with subpoenas.
The subpoenas to produce documents is related to a grand jury investigation apparently involving recordings of private conversations regarding the Pebble mine project.
Tom Collier, CEO of Pebble Limited Partnership, the company trying to develop Alaska’s Pebble Mine project, had resigned in September after his comments on elected and regulatory officials in the U.S. state were covertly videotaped and released by an environmental activist group.
