Bill would divert tourism funds to help counties with more state lands

Supporters of a bill winding its way through the Legislature say it will finally bring fairness when it comes to property taxes paid to counties with more state-owned lands, but others warn it takes funds from a much-needed lodging tax that helps Montana’s lodging industry reeling from the punch of COVID-19. However, those who opposed parts of the bill weren’t necessarily against the whole thing, but said it should take the funds from the portion of the lodging tax that goes to the state’s general fund and not the share that goes to help tourism. Senate Bill 355, sponsored by Sen. State budget advances, huge work on how to spend billions in federal aid starts soon

Behind the scenes, Montana's cannabis implementation bill taking shape

In the background of the first half of the Montana Legislature, lawmakers have been quietly cultivating the bill to bring recreational marijuana s implementation to life. Legislators in the majority party said last week they hope to reach a consensus-worthy bill — a reflective but revised version of the initiative voters passed last year — and have continued to hold high-level meetings with the governor s office. The bill could surface by the end of this week, a spokesperson for the House GOP said.  Rep. Mike Hopkins, R-Missoula, has taken a leading role in pulling the pieces of implementation together and is expected to carry the bill. He and others have prioritized a safe implementation of cannabis, which remains illegal at the federal level.
