Forbidden Trade Back On Track | Standardbred Canada

While he showed his usual talent, there was something different about 2019 Horse of the Year Forbidden Trade in his Saturday morning qualifying effort at The Meadowlands. During an 11-dash card of qualifiers at The Big M, one qualifying event definitely contained the most star power despite being reduced to a three-horse field. The group of older trotters included 2019 Hambletonian winner and Canada s Horse of the Year Forbidden Trade, 2020 Hambletonian winner and U.S. Three-Year-Old Trotting Filly of the Year Ramona Hill, and multiple world record holder and two-time divisional champion stateside Amigo Volo. All three of these horses were qualifying for the second time in 2021, with all three finishing back of When Dovescry in a 1:56.4 qualifier last Friday.

Stars Impress In Saturday Qualifiers | Standardbred Canada

A number of high-profile Standardbreds made solid strides toward a return to the races during the Saturday (April 24) session of qualifiers at The Meadowlands. Calle Palema (Ake Svanstedt) was a wire-to-wire winner in 1:56.1 over 2020 freshman standouts Zenith Stride (Brian Sears) and In Range (Tim Tetrick). The gelded son of Muscle Hill - Fillyanthropy, a three-time winner as a rookie, took a new lifetime mark for owner Bender Sweden Inc. of Vero Beach, Fl. Balenciaga didn t make any starts at two, but the $270,000 yearling started on the path to justifying that price tag with a first-over grinding win in 1:56.3. The son of Chapter Seven - Iluvmyjimmychoos was guided to victory by Scott Zeron for trainer Paul Kelley and owners SRF Stable and Crawford Farms. Maverick, harness racing s highest priced yearling by virtue of his $1.1 million sale price, made a break in stride while closing in the stretch.

Imhatra AS S Impresses At Big M | Standardbred Canada

Trainer Marcus Melander unveiled a contender for the Aug. 7 Hambletonian Oaks at The Meadowlands Friday night, as his Imhatra AM S worked out a perfect pocket trip with Brian Sears doing the driving on the way to winning her three-year-old debut in 1:56.3. Owned by Courant Inc, the daughter of 2009 Hambletonian champion Muscle Hill (who was handled by Sears) is out of the dam Tamla Celeber S, a million-dollar earner who won a Breeders Crown in 2012 when driven by Sears. Hambletonian eligible Swan Hill, a three-year-old colt by Muscle Hill-Swan Wise AS who is also from Melander’s barn, set sail for the lead in the three-year-old trotting event for non-winners of one and cut out fractions of :28.4, :58.3 and 1:28 before being overtaken in deep stretch along the pylons by his stablemate to finish three-quarters-of-a-length back in second. Perfect Record was third.

Melander On Gimpanzee, Stable Stars | Standardbred Canada

Since starting his stable in 2014, Marcus Melander’s stock has taken off, aided by many talented trotters including his recently retired champion Gimpanzee alongside other horses waiting in the wings to return to the racetrack in 2021. Gimpanzee, a now five-year-old son of Chapter Seven-Steamy Windows, wrapped his racing career with a 1:51.3 victory in the $500,000 Breeders Crown final before transitioning into his life as a stud, standing in Kentucky as part of moves by breeders to revitalize the burgeoning breeding program in the state. “He was sharp all from the start, and all through the season,” Melander told Trot Insider. “He was just an amazing racehorse. He was so easy on himself, always been a very sound horse of course. Nathalie [Norlander] had been taking great care of him over these last four years. The horse himself, he’s got great conformation; he stands good and all that. That’s very important, too. Then of course our training and everything, it worked
