Firefighters descended on Hampton Boat Sheds at Platt s Eyot, an island on the Thames at Hampton at around 5pm today. Fire officials warned people in the area to close their doors and windows. A number of fire engines and police cars rushed to the incident, which has now been brought under control.

Gigantic fire erupts on a boatyard near River Thames

A gigantic fire today ripped through two historic Grade-II listed boatyards on an island in the River Thames and sent plumes of smoke over southwest London.  Around 100 firefighters tackled the blaze as it engulfed an industrial area on Platt s Eyot island near Hampton on Monday. Those living nearby were advised to keep their windows and doors closed after the blaze erupted at the Hampton Boat Sheds at around 5.14pm. Two single-storey industrial units, understood to be Grade-II listed, timber-framed boathouses built in 1916, were completely destroyed in the fire.   London Fire confirmed a number of gas cylinders were involved in the blaze, and were cooled and removed by firefighters as some cylinders can explode.

One of the the historic “little ships” that rescued WW2 soldiers during the evacuation of Dunkirk is said to be among those lost in the fire. The inferno broke out at Platt’s Eyot in Hampton just after 5pm on Monday, with witnesses claiming to have heard “explosions” coming from the area. Boaters were trying to get close to the industrial fire to help as firefighters approached the island from the water.
