Polytechnics, Colleges of Education important in Nigeria - FG

The federal government on Tuesday inaugurated 46 governing councils of Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education (FCE). Education Minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Sony Echono, swore in the councils – 25 for Federal Polytechnics and 21 for FCE. NAN reports that Echono, who urged the members to bring their experiences to bear, stressed the importance of polytechnics and CEs in Nigeria. He said technical education was critical to the attainment of international minimum standards for human capital development. The official disclosed that the government recognised the need to enhance the nation’s manpower and redress the huge gap in skills acquisition. He listed the challenges facing the system as declining academic standards, examination malpractice, insufficient deployment of ICT and other innovative technologies.

Share The Federal Government inaugurated the recently reconstituted Governing Councils of 25 Federal Polytechnics and 21 Federal Colleges of Education with a charge to ensure that the Institutions are repositioned for quality teaching and learning to take place. Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who inaugurated the Councils on Tuesday in Abuja, particularly charged them to address the worrisome decline in academic standards and examination malpractice. He equally urged them to frontally address the issue of the unstable academic calendar, especially the challenge of frequent industrial actions by the staff unions of the institutions. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) is currently on strike and incidentally, one of the demands of the Union is the reconstitution of the Governing Councils to Federal Polytechnics as the Institutions have been operating without councils for over a year, until this inauguration on Tuesday.

Polytechnics will Remain Shut Until FG Addresses Our Demands, ASUP Insists

In a statement yesterday by ASUP President, Anderson Ezeibe, the union said that it commenced the industrial action on April 6 to draw the attention of the government to the deplorable state of our public Polytechnics and Monotechnics. “This is with a view to a reversal of the fortunes of the institutions and placing them on a strong pedestal towards meeting their obligations to the Nigerian people. “We are determined to pursue this position to a logical conclusion for the benefit of the sector, the nation and in favour of the rule of law.
