Lagos highway flooding: FG adopts early measures ahead of rainy season

By Grace Alegba Lagos, March. 1, 2021 Mr Olukayode Popoola, the Federal Controller of Works says work on drainage projects is ongoing, ahead of the rainy season to avert flooding in Lagos. Popoola told newsmen in Lagos on Monday that contractors had moved to sites since November 2020 and were still evacuating highway drains to tackle flooding in the city. According to him, the Federal Government had awarded contracts for the drainage projects to ensure the work are completed on time. He added that priority was also given to drainage works in ongoing projects across the state to take care of surface run offs on highways.

  The Lagos State Government has commenced the demolition of shanties and other structures built on the right of way of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. The state task force led by the Federal Controller of Works, Mr Olukayode Popoola, particularly targeted shanties along the service lane at Ladipo, Toyota and Charity Bustops, as well as those located under the bridge leading to the airport road. Every item found along the way including automobile parts were cleared.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fashola on Jan. 14 while inspecting the Airport flyover damaged by tanker fire also visited artisans, mechanics and other businesses in the axis. He had given them two weeks to vacate the RoW of the bridge and the ongoing Apapa-Oshodi-Ojota-Oworonshoki Expressway reconstruction project.

Workmen began early in the morning to clear the bridge of debris and removed crash barriers from the site and put finishing touches to asphalt laying on some sections before the main opening with spectators watching. Supervising the reopening at exactly 11:54am Mr Emmanuel Adeoye, Director, Highway Bridges and Design said that work on the surface of the bridge had been completed but additional work would continue underneath.
