Sindh govt scholarships remain out of reach for many Decision to expand programme yet to be approved by the provincial education minister KARACHI: A recent investigation conducted into the provision of higher education in the province has opened a new Pandora’s box, highlighting unfair distribution of annual scholarships worth billions, by the Sindh government. Sindh Education Endowment Fund (SEEF) was launched in the year 2002 to facilitate students of Sindh unable to afford the cost of higher education, who secure merit-based admissions in public and private universities. Despite the government’s good intentions, it seems that thousands of financially disadvantaged students from several universities, including Karachi University-the province’s largest public sector institution- have been unable to avail the scholarship for 19 consecutive years!

Academics sceptic about recently-passed Senate bill for compulsory Arabic education

Karachi February 7, 2021 Educators and academics have expressed reservations over a recently-passed bill from the Senate for making the teaching of Arabic compulsory at all the educational institutions, saying that the economic prospects of teaching Arabic are low and adding more languages to the curriculum will further deteriorate the teaching standards of mathematics and science subjects. A few days earlier, the Senate of Pakistan passed the Compulsory Teaching of Arabic Language Bill 2020, to make Arabic a compulsory subject at all the educational institutions. Talking to The News, a number of educators said the legislators should try to fill the loopholes of the educational system instead of overburdening the students. They opined that about 74 per cent of students from grade I to X were learning two languages Urdu and English – as compulsory subjects. Fuuast conducts entry test for third consecutive year Karachi January 15, 2021 The Federal Urdu University of Arts Science and Technology, while using resources of the admission and examination departments, conducted an entry test for its D- Pharmacy Programme 2021 for the third consecutive year. Last week, the varsity has postponed the test due to sit-ins organised in various parts of Karachi to show solidarity with the Hazara community. Later, a new date was given for the assessment process. According to Fuuast’s Admissions Department Director Dr Syed Ikhlaq Hussain, more than 1,100 candidates took the test on Thursday. The admission department used its full strength to make sure transparency as well as fully following the SOPs for Covid-19. The department had specified 54 examination halls for examinees while around 60 examiners and more than 10 invigilators were tasked to monitors the exams.
