Faced with galloping Covid and at a loss to rein in reckless public behaviour in complying with its âBreak the Chainâ restrictions, the Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday unanimously decided to impose a strict lockdown at least for 15 days, starting from 8pm on Wednesday. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who headed the cabinet meeting, is likely to make the announcement through a web address on Wednesday and thereafter, the government will issue a detailed order on the lockdown. This is despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying in his address to the nation that lockdown should be the last resort of states.

MUMBAI: The government order asking shops selling non-essentials to shut down till April 30 amid the rising Covid-19 cases in the city has upset the entire trader fraternity. Their grouse is that e-commerce, being tagged under the essential category, will be free to deliver even non-essential goods.
Viren Shah, president of the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association said that they have asked their members to put up a banner outside shops opposing the government move.
“We are also against the government decision to allow online players to deliver non-essential products without any restrictions which will be at the cost of lakhs of wholesale and retail traders. Huge quantities of stock will be lying unsold, but online players will have readymade business for non-essential products. We have asked our local traders to start online delivery by taking orders through WhatsApp if required,” he said
