Share on Twitter Australia’s Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan has established a plan for a new national anti-racism framework and is calling on the federal government to support and implement it.   Mr Tan released a concept paper on Wednesday setting out the main elements of the proposed plan, noting in the paper he was deeply troubled by the resurgence in racism being experienced in Australia and across the globe .  In a message released alongside the paper ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Sunday - also Harmony Day in Australia - Mr Tan said the need for a new framework has become “painfully apparent over the past year”.

The Department of Health on Monday confirmed that everyone who volunteers to receive a COVID-19 vaccine will be asked where they were born and what language they speak at home. The data will then be used to identify communities where the uptake of vaccines is lowest, allowing the government to channel culturally appropriate information campaigns about the safety and efficacy of vaccines. Similar data has been collected from every Australian who has tested positive for COVID-19 since late 2020.

Share on Twitter The federal government says country of birth and language data will soon be collected from all people presenting for a coronavirus vaccine.  This same information has been collected nationally on positive COVID-19 diagnoses since late 2020. A Department of Health spokesperson told SBS News its decision to collect the data was triggered by requests from community groups and health experts.  READ MORE They are hoping the data will help identify areas where the government needs to channel culturally-appropriate information about the vaccine.  In 2020, the Department of Health established the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities COVID-19 Health Advisory Group, which includes leaders from culturally, ethnically and linguistically diverse communities and their representative organisations, health experts and medical and public health practitioners, the spokesperson said.
