The story of Kenyan journalism will remain incomplete without a narrative on Philip Ochieng who died on April 27, aged 83.
Ochieng, who will be buried today, ranked among the elite journalists who left an indelible mark on the country’s media landscape.
Should one day the idea of a journalism hall of fame come to fruition, PO, as he was fondly known, would certainly feature alongside renowned Kenyan editors such as Boaz Omori, George Githii, Hilary Ng’weno, Joe Rodrigues, Henry Gathigira and George Mbugguss.
But Ochieng will be remembered more as a bridge that linked this pioneer generation to the mid-stream professionals he worked with through the one-party State and “second liberation” era. He also authored two books,

The Massillon Museum, Canton Museum of Art, and Canton Symphony partnered to offer the second annual Art Educator of the Year award and the fifth annual Music Educator of the Year awards to promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for music and art education and to honor those who are making a difference in our community through their dedication to music and art education.

Ashley Kessler, art teacher at Oakwood Middle School in Plain Local School District, was named the 2021 Art Educator of the Year.

Susan Cook, music teacher at Washington Elementary School in Marlington Local School District, was named the 2021 Music Educator of the Year.
“Kenya Editors Guild will use this platform to promote excellence in media and journalism that Philip Ochieng stood for. I celebrate him for having the courage to be different because in the current world, that is what most people are afraid of. We should all celebrate Philip’s knowledge, service and commitment to journalism,” said Mr Otieno.
PO, as he was commonly known, died two weeks ago at a hospital in Migori at the age of 83 after practicing journalism for more than five decades.
Other speakers, majority of them drawn from different media houses in the country, highlighted the contributions of the veteran editor and long-serving Nation columnist to the media industry.
