Fate of Madison bar with mob ties now awaits plan commission decision

By Adam Duxter Jul 25, 2021 | 5:59 PM MADISON, Wis. – The City of Madison’s Plan Commission will determine the fate of a bar with Mob ties during its Monday evening meeting. The restaurant was built in the 1930s by a rival gang of Chicago mobster Al Capone. Intentionally built outside of Madison’s city limits, it served as a hub for bootlegging alcohol during the prohibition. “It’s so cool, it’s a historical gangster tavern,” said preservationist Janelle Munns. “The thought of this building just turning to rubble just absolutely breaks my heart.” In May, the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation proposed lifting the building and moving it to another parcel of land. Preservationists have since learned, however, the building would be too heavy to carry over bridges and railroad tracks – limiting potential landing sites to Olin Park and the Alliant Energy Center campus.

Dane County Farmers' Market

Dane County Farmers Market 1:45 PM June 2, 2021 Things really are getting back to normal. There s no longer any reason for the Dane County Farmers’ Market not to return to the Capitol Square, and return it does this Saturday from its temporary home at the Alliant Energy Center. While the pandemic surged, limiting the size of gatherings, even those outdoors, was paramount, and so the crowds that flock to the crown jewel of area farmers markets were O-U-T. Now, lingering, chatting, coffee-sipping, cheese-bread-munching, wagon-dragging, and generally shuffling your way around Mifflin, Carroll, Main and Pinckney streets counterclockwise is back. Relish the produce and the community. Until the first helium balloon hits you in the schnozz. Note: The Wednesday market also returns downtown to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just off the Square.
