NATO to found Space centre of excellence 05 February 2021 by Gareth Jennings NATO is to establish a centre of excellence in France, dedicated solely to the Space domain. NATO is to establish a new Space centre of excellence in Toulouse, France. It is unclear what this centre’s relationship will be with the recently opened NATO Space Centre in Ramstein, Germany. (Airbus) The French Ministry of the Armed Forces announced on 4 February that the alliance had accepted a French proposal to site a new centre in Toulouse. “The ‘centre of excellence’ label is part of the Higher Education Pact implemented by the General Directorate of International Relations and Strategy. The goal [of this pact] is to regenerate and develop the pool of French researchers linked to defence,” the Ministry of the Armed Forces said.

With the Space Centre at Ramstein Airbase currently utilising experts from Germany, the UK, and the US, NATO plans to expand the alliance participating in the capability throughout 2021. (NATO) Speaking in early January, a NATO spokesperson said that the coming year will see additional members and personnel added to the Space Centre capability that was founded in October 2020. Currently, experts from Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States are assigned to the centre that is housed within Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) at Ramstein Airbase in Germany.
