We do know that those blooms … are starting earlier. They re becoming more intense and they re lasting longer, Leavitt said, citing atmospheric warming as a leading cause.
Leavitt published a paper last year that found toxins were present in the Qu Appelle lakes during more days of the summer than 15 years earlier. Toxin levels in the lakes, at times, were above recreational advisory levels, his paper said.

The algae blooms are also fed by phosphorus and nitrates released into the water system from municipal wastewater plants or through runoff from agricultural operations. Cabin owners sometimes also contribute to the algae by fertilizing their lawns, not having proper septic systems or letting outdoor showers drain into the lake, Leavitt said.

Those using Highway 11 in the Lumsden Valley will want to take note of some traffic restrictions that take effect Monday.
The northbound bridge over the Qu’Appelle River and the northbound overpass over Highway 20 will both be rehabilitated. The contractor, Westridge Construction Inc. from Regina, will begin work on April 13, 2021.
The project is estimated to cost $1.7 million and is scheduled for completion in the late fall.

Drivers may experience delays, as both bridges will be worked on simultaneously with traffic restricted to one lane at each site. As a precaution, traffic will be slowed to 80 km/hr before entering the valley and restricted to 60 km/hr through the construction site. Speed fines will remain tripled so motorists are advised to take extra caution with speed when entering the valley. Oversized loads will be accommodated by the contractor once the Highways Hotline is given 24 hours-
A Manitoba company in particular was instrumental in getting the word out that going into cattle was smart and a money maker. They were Gordon & Ironside, later Gordon, Ironside & Fares. These men had come from Ontario to Manitoba in the early 1880s. They became important cattle buyers and were also actually into ranching, buying and running ranches in various parts of the North West, including one ranch in the vicinity of Yorkton. These three men became prominent in business and were also involved in politics in Manitoba.
We have more names to add to the impressive list of ranchers that was published last week:
Welcome to Week XIV of Fishing Parkland Shorelines . Like most of us I am a novice fisherman, loving to fish, but far from an expert. In the following weeks I ll attempt to give those anglers who love to fish but just don t have access a boat a look at some of the options in the Yorkton area where you can fish from shore, and hopefully catch some fish for a good summer fry.
The Qu Appelle Valley is one of the most picturesque areas in East Central Saskatchewan, and that wonderful scenery is the backdrop to this week s excursion to do a little shore fishing.
