Edmonds School District planning to offer full-time in-person learning option this fall

Edmonds School District planning to offer full-time in-person learning option this fall Posted: May 12, 2021 66 The Edmonds School District is planning to return students to full-time in-person learning at the start of the 2021-22 school year, according to district leaders. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ May 11 business meeting, Superintendent Gustavo Balderas said the district intends to offer students the option to return to in-person leaning five days a week or stay 100% remote. “Our goal is to have as many of our kids as possible to come back to our campuses,” he said. According to Balderas, staff are still working out the details for remote learning, but added that online learning will look different for elementary, middle and high school grade levels. The logistics of returning students to school buildings full-time will be based on guidance from the Washington State Department of Health.

With a drop in student enrollment, ESD staff work to find jobs for displaced teachers

MY EDMONDS NEWS Posted: April 28, 2021 118 The Edmonds School Board Tuesday night heard from Spruce Elementary School second-grade students about their work to help orphaned baby bears at PAWS in Lynnwood. Due to a drop in student enrollment, the Edmonds School District is working to find jobs for dozens of displaced teachers or risk issuing them pink slips by mid-May. Since March 2020, the district has seen an enrollment decrease of 173 FTE students. At the Edmonds School Board of Directors’ April 27 business meeting, staff explained that the decline in student enrollment has left the district with 47.02 FTE (full-time equivalent) employees at risk of being displaced. However, with 50.3 FTE vacancies to fill, Human Resources Director Debby Carter said staff are optimistic they will not have to resort to layoffs.

Endorsements!

As they say, all politics is local, and in Lane County, local politics gets heated when it’s school board elections.  The issues are huge in K-12 education  racism and diversity, COVID, standardized testing and more. We are impressed by all the people willing to take on this tough and important duty. Good board members are simultaneously independent thinkers, willing to question how the board is voting and why, and yet also able to function effectively with other board members they may not always agree with to get things done.  It’s great when voters and candidates get fired up about the school board  especially if it means positive changes for the kids. So knowing that Eugene and surrounding communities take their school boards seriously, our small editorial board Zoomed with as many candidates as we could, and sent surveys out to the ones who we either couldn’t squeeze in or who didn’t respond. Some candidates didn’t respond in time or at all.

Aiming to meet Gov. Jay Inslee’s emergency proclamation issued last month to offer in-person learning to all students by April 19, the district welcomed back third- through sixth-graders Monday, April 12. According to the order, school districts across the state must offer a minimum of 30% of students two in-person learning days. K-2 students returned on March 22 and grade 7-12 students will return April 19.
