Dr. Mia Farrell, a Louisville native, started her journey at UK as an undergraduate student in 2006. Now, she is the assistant dean and director for diversity at the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. She has a rich background in extension services, human development and community leadership. Dr. Farrell also serves as the national president of MANRRS: Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences. Can you tell me about your background? I earned my B.A. in agricultural economics as an undergraduate student at UK. After graduation, I became a 4-H youth development educator in Hopkinsville, Ky. for three and a half years. During that time, I earned my master’s in human development leadership with a concentration in college student personnel. MSU Virtual Reality App Helps Recognize Unconscious Bias I m not going to lie, when virtual reality first came out I was a little freaked out by it. Then I tried it, then my boyfriend got it and I hopped on the bandwagon. One thing that always stuck with me was what virtual technology could do in terms of education. We could virtually be able to explore the world, learn about other cultures, there are endless possibilities in schools and just give everyone the opportunity learn so much about the world around us. Now, Michigan State University has created an app that uses virtual reality to do just that when it comes to learning and recognizing things like racial biases we may not even realize we have.
