People ages 60 and older will no longer need an appointment at 16 mass vaccination sites in New York beginning Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
It comes after New York expanded vaccine eligibility to all people ages 16 and above on April 6, which boosted vaccinations overall but raised concerns the elderly would struggle to gain access to shots. There are no excuses now not to get the vaccine, Cuomo said during an event at the mass vaccination site at the National Guard Armory in Yonkers, Westchester County.
About 8.4 million New Yorkers, or 42% of the population, have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccines as of Tuesday, state data show.
New York will no longer require those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to wear masks outdoors in most situations, putting its mandate in line with new federal guidelines issued Tuesday afternoon.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the state would tweak its existing mask mandate to align with the CDC guidance, which says those who are two weeks removed from their final vaccine dose do not have to wear masks during outdoor activities and recreation except in certain crowded settings and venues.
New York s mandate previously required mask usage in outdoor settings when unable to social distance, even when vaccinated. It will continue to require mask usage in most indoor settings outside the home.
