Tourism industry counting workers for vaccines

Vaccinating tourism industry employees, including restaurant and bar workers, is important to reopening the island’s economy and tourism industry, according to the Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association, which this week asked employers to help provide an accurate count of workers, including furloughed workers, who will need vaccines. “The goal will be to have scheduled vaccination clinics for the workforce,” said GHRA President Mary Rhodes, or, at a minimum, expanding vaccine eligibility to those workers. The government’s Vaccine and Antiviral Prioritization Policy Committee has not yet expanded eligibility to workers in the food and hospitality industries. All residents 50 and older will be eligible for vaccines, starting next week, the committee decided, but vaccines so far have been approved only for the following occupations, regardless of age: school workers involved with face-to-face instruction; child care workers; healthcare workers; law enforcement; funeral and cem

CDC lowers Guam s travel risk level, says avoid nonessential trips

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reduced Guam s travel risk to Level 3, which states travelers should avoid all nonessential travel to Guam.   Following a surge in August, Guam was rated at the highest level, Level 4, which states travelers should avoid all travel to these destinations.   Guam s COVID Area Risk score was 47 at the time. Since then, it s down to 0.1.  “The CDC has recognized the success of our policies and the commitment of our people to do what is necessary to protect one another and have downgraded our travel risk from Level 4 to Level 3,” Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said Tuesday. “While we still have much work to do to further lower our risk, we are confident in our progress under Operation Liberate Guam, our campaign to vaccinate at least 80% of our adult population by July.”
