A 19% unemployment rate is staggering. According to the Guam Department of Labor website, “The unemployment rate in Guam for December 2020 was 19.4%, an increase of 1.5 percentage points from the September 2020 figure of 17.9 % and up 13.3 percentage points from the December 2019 figure one year earlier.”
It is estimated that over 20,000 people who worked in the private sector do not have jobs. Thank goodness we have the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. How would our people have survived financially without it?
We need to start prioritizing how we are going to provide employment for our private-sector workers who have lost their jobs. I had remarked recently to a business colleague that with the reopening of our economy due to vaccinations, we are well on our way to recovery.

Naval base commander: Safe Haven liberty concept in the works

It involves providing on-base and off-base recreational activities for personnel.
“This is something we are developing,” Capt. Jeffrey Grimes said during an online forum hosted by the Guam Chamber of Commerce and the Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association. “In military terminology, it’s ‘pre-decisional.’”
He said ongoing decisions with the island business community, including Thursday’s forum, are part of the development process.
The concept involves only the Navy, for visiting ships, he said.
The military last July announced that U.S. Naval Base Guam was designated as a Safe Haven Liberty port for ships to safely pull in for supplies, repairs and rest and relaxation during the pandemic. Visiting sailors have been allowed to use specific facilities on base, as well as a secured beach, also on base.
