Justin Caram, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the UCLA College, has been named one of 25 Cottrell Scholars for the quality and innovation of his research program and his academic leadership skills. He will receive a $100,000 award for his project “Chemical Physics Informed Design of SWIR Emissive Molecules.”
The Cottrell Scholar program honors and helps to develop outstanding teacher-scholars who are recognized by their scientific communities for the quality and innovation of their research programs and their potential for academic leadership. The program champions the very best early career teacher-scholars in chemistry, physics and astronomy by providing significant discretionary awards for research. Nurturing an interdisciplinary community of outstanding scientific, educational and academic leaders, the program fosters synergy among faculty at major U.S. and Canadian research universities and primarily undergraduate institutions.
School of Engineering and Applied Sciences professor Evelyn L. Hu and Physics professor John M. Doyle moved for the establishment of a new graduate program in Quantum Science and Engineering during a meeting of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Tuesday.
The program â which would bridge several existing departments and areas in FAS and SEAS, including Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science â would train students in speaking âa common languageâ relevant to practical applications of the study of subatomic particle behavior, Doyle said in an interview.
Hu said in an interview that the emergence of a field in quantum science bears resemblance to the initial days of computer science, when âcomputer science slowly emerged from math.â

Heads or tails? If we toss two coins into the air, the result of one coin toss has nothing to do with the result of the other. Coins are independent objects. In the world of quantum physics, things are different: quantum particles can be entangled, in which case they can no longer be regarded as independent individual objects, they can only be described as one joint system.
For years, it has been possible to produce entangled photons - pairs of light particles that move in completely different directions but still belong together. Spectacular results have been achieved, for example in the field of quantum teleportation or quantum cryptography. Now, a new method has been developed at TU Wien (Vienna) to produce entangled atom pairs - and not just atoms which are emitted in all directions, but well-defined beams. This was achieved with the help of ultracold atom clouds in electromagnetic traps.
