Amid criticism from opposition parties, Sri Lanka has unveiled a contentious draft law for a Colombo Port City Commission which allows for sweeping tax breaks, tax-free salaries and be an offshore financial centre. The USD 1.4-billion Colombo Port City project is slated to be the single largest private sector development in Sri Lanka. There have been concerns about Beijing seeking to increase its footprint in the country through contentious infrastructure projects.

Share: COLOMBO (News 1st): The adjournment debate on the ‘current situation in the country,’ which commenced on Tuesday (May 04) will continue on Wednesday (05) from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, Secretary-General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake said. The Committee on Parliamentary Business chaired by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena on Tuesday (May 04) decided NOT to hold the debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill today (05). The debate on the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill will NOT be held today, as the Speaker is yet to receive the determination of the Supreme Court with regard to the petitions filed challenging the bill, Dhammika Dasanayake further noted.
