Major UK museums to collaborate with Fiji Museum

Major UK museums to collaborate with Fiji Museum To mark Fiji’s 50th anniversary of independence, the Fiji Museum and four major museums in the UK have been discussing to collaborate over knowledge exchange about historic Fijian artefacts held in the UK. From: 8 February 2021 Civavonovono (composite breastplate of whale ivory and pearl shell); early 19th century, 28cm; Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology (Z 2730). This chiefly breastplate belonged to Tanoa and his son Seru Cakobau, both Vunivalu of Bau, and very likely was presented by Cakobau in 1875-76 to Sir Arthur Gordon, the first resident Governor of Fiji, who later donated it to the Cambridge museum. Fiji Museum has several high-quality breastplates of this type, some of them currently on display in Los Angeles (photo courtesy of Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology).

Part of the Colonial Enterprise : Scholars, Advocates React to Discovery of the Remains of Enslaved People in Peabody Museum Collections | News

Following a University report that indicated the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology houses the remains of formerly enslaved people within its collections, anthropology scholars and curator advocates called on Harvard to promote conversations regarding museums’ roles in perpetuating racism. At the end of January, University President Lawrence S. Bacow announced the results of a Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology review, which found that the museum’s collections include the remains of 15 individuals of African descent who were likely alive during the time of slavery in the United States. Tomiko Brown-Nagin, dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and chair of the presidential initiative on Harvard and the Legacy of Slavery, a University-wide effort to examine the legacy of slavery at Harvard, responded to Bacow’s announcement in a note to Radcliffe staff.

Oxford don is handed £1m payout following his victory in legal battle over his mother s £1 25m home

An Oxford University don who sued after his mother fell for a female lawyer half her age and disinherited him has been handed a payout of almost £1million. Archaeology Professor Christopher Gosden said Dr Jean Weddell had vowed in 2003 to leave him her London home, but he was left with nothing when she died in 2013. It was after she fell in love with Wendy Cook, a barrister 37 years her junior, and formed a civil partnership in 2007 aged 78. By the time she died in 2013, she had made a new will, handing nothing to her son, but leaving much of her estate to her new partner.
