01 February 2021 Save the Children and Facebook launch the first ever Online Safety Campaign in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga 01 February 2021 Save the Children is partnering with Facebook to deliver a campaign in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Tonga titled, ‘I Am Digital’, specifically directed at issues that concern children and young people from local communities and where they are seeking reliable support. Parents, guardians and community leaders in 10 communities in the Central Division have been trained on using positive forms of discipline such as cutting down the time on some of their child’s privileges like watching TV. Save the Children Fiji’s Parenting Without Resorting to Violence Program is funded by the Canada Fund. Save the Children CEO Shairana Ali says it is common in our communities for parents to beat children to discipline them, but they will now use these alternative forms of discipline.

Long term funding a challenge for Save The Children Fiji

“At the moment we do have a cash assistant program funded by a private donor and through that program, we are assisting 14,000 households which have been affected by COVID-19, we are providing a $100 cash transfer to these families.” She says the transfer began in December and will continue in four-cycle. Ali says the purpose of the assistance is to supplement the family income and provides for children’s needs. The child rights organisation partnered with the Fiji Council of Social Services (FCOSS) and Vodafone Fiji to reach more than 19,000 households with digital cash transfers. Save the Children Fiji CEO Shairana Ali said working with the FCOSS and Vodafone Fiji would allow for fast and efficient support to vulnerable families affected by the pandemic. “Save the Children’s partnership with digital mobile money company like Vodafone means that we can quickly reach the most vulnerable families across Fiji impacted by COVID-19. Save the Children’s expertise in cash transfer and Vodafone’s huge reach across Fiji means families will soon feel the relief they desperately need during these trying times,” she said.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) on Tuesday, the COVID-19 assistance by Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) started last April. As of today, the Fund has paid out 109 million Fijian dollars (about 53.4 million U.S. dollars) for all the COVID-19 assistance so far. We are running various continuation of phases and government top-up is at about 80 million Fijian dollars (about 39.2 million U.S. dollars), said Jaoji Koroi, chief executive of the FNPF.
