The new Children’s Commissioner has piled pressure on Boris Johnson to extend free school meals across the summer holidays. Dame Rachel de Souza said she would be “fearless” in representing children’s interests - and urged the PM not to “drop” the £20 uplift in Universal Credit.
And she said every Government department should be constantly pushing to improve the lives of children to ensure they do not become the lost generation.”
Asked what immediate changes she would like to see as she took over the role, Dame Rachel said: “I absolutely want to see free school meals extended.
