February 5, 2021 In response to the escalating child care crisis, one of many pressing social issues exacerbated by the pandemic, the new Biden administration has pledged to offer relief to child care providers struggling to stay open, as well as to help parents struggling to pay for child care. Early childhood advocates cheer the relief package but also warn that deeper reform may be needed. The core of Biden’s early childhood relief proposal involves a $40 billion pot of money, including $25 billion earmarked to stabilize the child care industry. The money would go toward helping providers pay for rent, utilities and payroll, as well as increased costs due to the pandemic, such as personal protective equipment and ventilation.

Jerletha McDonald has no kids enrolled at her day care in Arlington, Texas. When the pandemic broke out, significant help arrived quickly for working parents in many rich countries, with one notable exception: the United States. Now, nearly a year later, President Joe Biden aims to address what has become one of the most daunting obstacles to a full economic recovery, with policy proposals such as more money for child care and families. If people don t have care, then they can t get to work, said Heather Boushey, a member of Biden s Council of Economic Advisers, in an interview. Bigger changes to the system are urgent, she said, to help families during the pandemic and beyond. They are core to how we need to be thinking about the economic recovery.

$600 Grants For Pennsylvania Childcare Workers Go Quickly

Kathleen J. Davis / 90.5 WESA Gov. Tom Wolf unveiled the program Wednesday, and by Friday there was already a waitlist for the money set aside for Allegheny County, according to Cara Ciminillo, who leads the Pittsburgh-based childcare advocacy nonprofit Trying Together. “It was sort of no surprise that the pandemic relief award went so quickly,” Ciminillo said. “We know [childcare workers are] the folks that are really helping to keep the economy going by making sure our essential workers and families can work.” On Monday, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services confirmed that the number of grant applications likely exhausts the amount of money available to the county’s providers. It still encouraged providers to submit applications ahead of a Feb. 12 deadline so they can be considered as additional funds become available.
