Children removed from parents for safety left sleeping in Garda stations – study

The most common reason children were removed from their home was due to parenting difficulties, followed by alcohol or drug abuse by parents, child behavioural difficulties, and child neglect. In other cases where children slept in Garda stations overnight, social workers were often faced with a “crisis” trying to secure a proper placement the next morning, or to quickly assess if it was safe to return them to their home. The study said placing children in Garda stations or hospitals was “not appropriate”, and it was “preferable” for children to be close to their family and social environment, if they were removed from their home.

Child Care Centres Remain Open, Receive Financial Support from Province During Shutdown

Child Care Centres Remain Open, Receive Financial Support from Province During Shutdown April 28, 2021 - 6:57 PM Nova Scotia’s regulated child-care centres and licensed Family Home Child Care Agencies will remain open during the province-wide shutdown. This is necessary to support health-care and other pandemic workers who require child care in order to work. Families who have the ability to keep their children home will help create spaces for the children of these workers. Parents will not be charged fees if they choose to keep their children at home and they will not lose their spot when their children return. Government is committed to supporting the sector for costs incurred in keeping child-care centres open, staffed and ready to receive children of workers needing child care over the next two weeks. Subsidies will be available on a sliding scale for families with an income less than $70,000.
