CALOOCAN CITY, June 2 (PIA) — Big civil society organizations advocating for the phase-out of single-use plastics (SUPs) will gather virtually to discuss the dangerous effects of SUPs on people’s health, the environment, and climate, and assess the proposed Single-use Plastic Products.

It is too early to say whether the dolomite sand dumped in Manila Bay has been washed out, said Environment Undersecretary Jonas Leones.
According to Leones, the “dolomite beach” project is not yet complete, and “geotubes” have also been installed to ensure that artificial sand is not eroded.
“We have put in place ‘yong mga geotubes to ensure na ‘di mawa-wash out ‘yong mga dolomite. Siguro too early to say na nag-wash out na siya,” said Leones.
After the civil society organization, Oceana Philippines said in April that the artificial white sand is eroding.
“From December 2020 to February 2021, this dolomite beach has eroded by at least 300 square meters. They are refilling it again and even extending the area,” said Oceana Vice President Gloria Ramos.

There is a need to strictly implement and put into motion the National Sardines Management Plan especially during the closed fishing season in the Visayan Sea to ensure food and livelihood security for municipal fisherfolk and commercial fish workers during the period.
Based on the Fisheries Administrative Order no. 167-3 issued in 2013, portions of the Visayan Sea are closed for catching, selling, and buying of sardines and herrings (tamban/ tabagak/ tamban-tuloy/ balantiong) and mackerels (hasa-hasa/ gumaa/ bulao/ alumahan) while the Zamboanga Peninsula’s closed fishing season is for sardines only.
The closed season in the Visayan Sea started on November 15 until February 15, 2021 while the Zamboanga Peninsula closed season for sardines started on December 1, 2020 to March 1, 2021.
