The news comes as Boris Johnson warns Brits a no-deal Brexit is “very likely”. Blue Seas Protection said up to nine of the words largest fishing trawlers were operating in protected conservation areas south east of the Isle of White. The vessels had mostly come from the Netherlands, an EU member state, and were fishing in the UK’s Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs). The UK Government said the trawlers were operating legally under current legislation.

The Met Office has issued two amber warnings for parts of south-west England and Wales, as the weather service warns: “Heavy rain will cause travel disruption and flooding.” There are warnings of homes and businesses likely to be flooded, causing inevitable damage to some buildings. Post-Brexit trade talks remain on the brink with outstanding issues remaining over fisheries and the level playing field ahead of the transition period deadline of December 31. Former Brexit Party MEP James Wells says he expects an agreement to be reached in the coming days but raised major concerns over the lack of time MPs would have to scrutinise hundreds of pages of legal texts.

Post-Brexit trade talks between the UK and EU continue to hang on a knife edge ahead of the official end of the transition period on December 31. However, there remains just a few days to get a trade deal over the line with MPs sent home for the Christmas break on Thursday evening and the European Parliament demanding a copy of the legal text by Sunday.

German-based pressure group Environmental Action Germany (DUH), and Our Fish, a UK-based charity, have condemned the bloc s approach after Virginijus Sinkevicius, the EU commissioner for the environment, oceans and fisheries, confirmed it was ignoring scientific advice by setting fishing limits in excess of the recommended total in about one third of EU fish stocks. The ongoing dispute with respect to quotas in the north-east Atlantic means a target set in 2013 to end overfishing by 2020 will now be missed.
