Guest column: A shooting survivor s take on crime bills

As a crime victim, I cheered in 2019 when the state passed one of the most ambitious public safety improvements in decades. It enhanced probation, expanded access to victim services and removed barriers to occupational licenses so people with past convictions could get back to work. These are all policies that make our communities safer and more stable.
But as the lone survivor of shooting that left seven bullets in my body and two others dead, I know there is much more to be done. That’s why it is so important that legislators consider three recently introduced bills that promise to help more victims heal, make everyone safer and use state funds more efficiently.

The first COVID-19 death in the United States was reported one year ago. Since then, more than 500,000 people across the country have died as a result of the pandemic. But another, less reported public health and safety crisis has killed tens of thousands of people in the same period violence.
