Back in the mid-’60s, the Philly Sound was a well-known and recognizable musical genre. Thanks to DJs and promoters like the great Jerry Blavat, Hy Lit, Frank X Feller, and vocal groups such as the Magnificent Men, the Delfonics, and the Soul Survivors, Philly music enjoyed a celebrated reputation among other artists and fans. It was considered rougher than the popular Motown label of the period, but not as bluesy as the Southern soul coming out of Muscle Shoals or Memphis. Donnelly spent a year commuting from Philly to Wilmington while working as a bartender at the Oddity Bar, under the former management of Pat McCutcheon and Andrea McCauley. It was like the first bartending job that I had, and they were very accepting of someone being able to leave and come back, and go on tour and do stuff like that, he said. They were very supportive of it.”
Donnelly, who has upcoming shows in Red Bank and Jersey City, New Jersey; Philly, New York and D.C. (most of which are in the fall), spoke to The News Journal about how he whipped up “Tough Cookies.”

After a year-long hiatus, the Allegheny Summer Concert Series will return with live performances starting June 4. Events will begin at 7:30 p.m and occur every Friday at South Park Amphitheater and every Sunday at Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater.
The series kicks off on Friday, June 4, with a performance from Pittsburgh Opera, and will conclude on September 5 with the 21st Annual Allegheny County Music Festival. All performances will be free (with the exception of the Music Festival, which will request a $20-per-vehicle donation to benefit children receiving services from the county’s Department of Human Resources).
