Premier Moe hopes federal budget will include funding towards health care, infrastructure

Premier Moe hopes federal budget will include funding towards health care, infrastructure By Moises Canales Apr 19, 2021 12:00 PM Saskatchewan’s premier has laid out his hopes for the federal budget set to be announced Monday afternoon. Speaking to reporters on Friday about the budget announcement, Moe said he wants the federal government to commit to being a full-funding partner of health care with a lift to the Canada Health Transfer over the next year or two. He also wants more funding to Saskatoon’s VIDO-InterVac as they continue to develop a Saskatchewan-made COVID-19 vaccine. “If we are at some point in time going to encounter a variant of COVID that the current vaccines do not address, we’d be able to adapt to addressing that issue very quickly with the research, development and production capabilities that VIDO-InterVac is working towards,” discussed Moe.

The US Is Closer to a Zero-Carbon Grid Than It Seems

Alerts Photo: Getty (Getty Images) The U.S. has a lot of work to do to draw down carbon emissions. But a new report shows that when it comes to the energy grid, things are actually in better shape than researchers thought it’d be by this point. Advertisement The analysis from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory takes a look back at federal projections from the Energy Information Administration from 2005. The agency forecast that carbon pollution tied to electricity generation would increase 600 million metric tons between 2005 and 2020, a 25% increase from 2,400 million tons. That’s not what happened, though. Instead, carbon emissions from the grid actually fell to 1,450 million metric tons in 2020. That’s a 40% reduction compared to 2005 and 52% below where the EIA thought grid-related emissions would be by now.

Food system emissions need attention at Biden s climate summit

Recent studies estimate that the food system contributes about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. For perspective, this represents more global greenhouse gas emissions than from the combustion of any individual fossil fuel, including coal. The figures are substantial even at a country level. In the United States, for example, food system emissions constitute about 25 percent of total national global greenhouse gas emissions. In Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, the food system generates over 70 percent  of total emissions. In China, the share of global greenhouse gas emissions attributable to its food system is smaller (less than 20 percent), but these emissions are larger in absolute terms than for any other country and constitute nearly 5 percent of global emissions.
