Giant Creature, The Size Of Human Baby, Shocks Villagers In The Solomon Islands
05/11/21 AT 10:50 AM
People in the Solomon Islands were shocked to find a giant creature, as big “as a human baby,” during a hunting expedition.
This frog was first discovered in April, but its photos went viral this week. Timber mill owner Jimmy Hugo, 35, was hunting a wild pig on the outskirts of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, when he came across the amphibian. Hugo said the frog was caught by a couple of dogs who were playing with it in the bushes. He managed to take pictures of the creature and get it back to his village.

If you haven’t seen a Solomon Islands giant webbed frog (
Cornufer guppyi), you have got to see this beast of a frog. In April, pig hunters in the Solomon Islands captured what has to be one of the largest frog species, the Shortland Island webbed frog. The frog, of the family Ceratobatrachidae is massive, nearly 10 inches snout-to-vent length and weighing 2.2 lbs (1 kg).
Jimmy Hugo, operations manager at a timber mill where the hunters work, posted a photo of the frog onto his social media account and was surprised how many people took interest in the massive amphibian, which the locals call bush chicken, because of its supposed taste.

In mid-April, a band of timber mill employees hunting wild pigs captured a frog they described as being the size of a human baby on the outskirts of Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.
The mill owner, Jimmy Hugo, shared a photo of the enormous animal with his Facebook friends with the caption, Where I come from, it s call bush chicken. The nickname is an allusion to Solomon Islanders fondness for serving amphibians, Hugo told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
It s more delicious than chicken, Hugo said.

Remote communities in the Shortland Islands and Malaita Outer Islands, who are highly dependent on fisheries and marine resources, have had their normal trading routes impacted by border closures as a result of COVID-19.
The Solomon Islands’ Livelihoods Support Committee requested the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources to assess options to support these affected communities through targeted income generating and food security projects.
