At a Friday news conference, Deb Gordon, the provincial health authority’s vice president and chief operating officer, said temporary bed closures are not uncommon for AHS or any other health system across Canada, and that one closure has only a “limited impact” on patients because there are enough beds to address the need.

According to AHS, 125 acute care beds are currently closed across the province approximately 1.5 per cent of the province’s beds.

EDMONTON – Alberta’s Opposition health critic is sounding the alarm on hospital bed closures in the province during the summer due to staffing shortages.
NDP member of the legislature David Shepherd said Monday he estimates about 12 communities have been affected and as many as 99 beds have been temporarily closed.
“There are a lot of people with pent up health-care issues and untreated conditions who are now showing up at our hospitals seeking care,” Shepherd said.

Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton has been forced to temporarily close six of its emergency department beds as it deals with a staffing shortage. Multiple rural hospitals around the province have also had to temporarily close beds or emergency-room services due to a lack of doctors and nurses.

“People who need emergency care can and should continue to go to the Royal Alex the folks there are able to still continue to make sure people can get the critical care that they need,” Shandro said at an unrelated press conference Monday morning.
