Died: November 6, 2020. GEORGE COCKCROFT, who has died aged 87, was better known to millions of readers as Luke Rhinehart, author of one of the quintessential late 20th-Century counter-cultural novels. The Dice Man (1971), about a bored psychiatrist – also named Luke Rhinehart – who decides to live his life based on the roll of the dice, transcended cult status to become a totem of its time. Presented as a kind of pseudo-autobiography of the mythical Rhinehart, the book tapped into the 1960s generation’s search for freedom with a darkly troubling humour, and went on to sell more than two million copies. While Cockcroft stayed away from the limelight, the success of The Dice Man saw another 10 books appear under the Rhinehart byline, with some of them later reworked.

The Lions also announced that Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders, former Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis and former Arizona Cardinals GM Rod Graves will serve as advisors for the team’s searches.
Two of the best players in Detroit Lions history will help the team find its next head coach and general manager.
Chris Spielman, who made four Pro Bowls in eight seasons with the Lions, has left his broadcast position with Fox to become special assistant to Lions president Rod Wood and chairman Sheila Ford Hamp.
As part of his wide-ranging responsibilities, Spielman will sit in on all interviews in the Lions ongoing search for a new head coach and general manager, and will circle back and spend time with the three internal candidates the team interviewed last week.
While Spielman will have a permanent role in the organization, the Lions also established a three-member advisory group to help vet candidates and weigh in on what criteria should be used to pick the next coach and GM: Hall-of-Fame running back Barry Sanders, Fritz-Pollard Alliance executive director Rod Graves, and former Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis.
