Sail Port Stephens day 3 preview

Sail Port Stephens day 3 preview by Nic Douglass 21 Apr 01:30 UTC 19-25 April 2021 The final day of the Bannisters Port Stephens Commodore s Cup is here already, and for the third day in a row, the 108 boats will start off the Nelson Bay breakwall in a westerly breeze. Today, instead of the spinnaker starts we have enjoyed over the past two days, we will see the fleet head into the westerly for the Explore the Bays course, right up to West Arm, around Boondaba Island, and then back to the Nelson Bay breakwall to finish under spinnaker. Then tonight we will head to Bannisters Port Stephens to mark the halfway point of the regatta with the Commodore s Cup and brilliant band Sons of Beaches.

Sail Port Stephens - Day 3

Red William, 1st Non-spinnaker Commodores Cup at Sail Port Stephens © Mark Rothfield Sunny with winds 15 to 25 km/h becoming light in the late afternoon was how the official forecasters optimistically described today s weather for Sail Port Stephens. At least they were right about the sunshine. The breeze built to a fresh 20+ knots, with more than a sniff of southerly, and it blew away the chances of some of the fancied frontrunners in the Bannisters Port Stephens Commodores Cup fleet, along with an overnight adjustment of PHS handicaps. Of course, it also brought other boats roaring back into contention. Today s inshore race favoured yachts with longer waterlines and the flexibility to power and de-power as required, with no better example than Little Nico. To its hat-trick of line-honours wins, the Shaw 11 added an overall handicap victory in Division 1.

Sail Port Stephens - Day 2

Starting off Nelson Bay breakwall, the yachts donned spinnakers for a sparkling run in nor westerly winds gusting to 18 knots. Many hugged Yacaaba Headland under the stern gaze of seabirds and dolphins, modern sails juxtaposed against the majestic, millennium-old cliffs. They then wove around Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah Islands, which stand like sentries at the entrance to this pristine marine park.

Full sail ahead for huge Sail Port Stephens fleet

Australian Sport Boat NSW titles at Sail Port Stephens © Mark Rothfield A year after its COVID-enforced cancellation, Sail Port Stephens regatta has rebounded in record style, filling marina berths, moorings and motels while boasting the largest number of individual entries across the various yacht, sports boat, dinghy and Windsurfer categories. From midday Monday, 108 yachts across four divisions will contest the 2021 Bannisters Port Stephens Commodores Cup, sailing one of 14 scenic inshore and offshore courses that Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson nominates. Among Div.1 line-honours contenders will be the Marten 49 Indigo2, DK46 Khaleesi, Shaw 11 Little Nico and local yacht 51st Project, a Beneteau First 50. The Azuree 46 Kayimai is another regatta regular with a remarkable turn of speed under kite, always well sailed by her Middle Harbour crew.
