Tuscaloosan co-starring in NBC sitcom as 15-year-old Dwayne Johnson

At 22, Bradley Constant can relate to the 15-year-old he s playing in NBC comedy Young Rock, which debuts Tuesday. Both he and Dwayne The Rock Johnson come from supportive families; both have tight relationships with their moms. Both grew up with athletes around, and both are focused on careers in show business. Both dream big, and take decisive action to make those visions come true. Constant, a Tuscaloosa born-and-raised actor, is getting his big break playing that 15-year old version of Johnson, who his family called Dewey. Though he performed in a few musicals in elementary school, Constant was more interested in baseball and basketball than acting, until he was sidelined.

Connell writing memoir, Allman brothers connection

The morning after Bill Connell graduated from Tuscaloosa High School, class of 66, decked out in Sunday-go-to-meetin silver shark skin suit, he flew out of the Druid City at 7 a.m. on Southern Airways, and into New York City on Duane Allman s dime. The 17-year-old musician was joining the Allman Joys, a quartet precursor to the fabled Allman Brothers Band, hired to replace Maynard Portwood, who despite being talented on the skins, was cursed with a sugar addiction that pushed him to spend intended dentistry dollars on peach sodas and pralines. Those cravings left him virtually toothless, Connell said, a visual that didn t fit Duane Skydog Allman s image of their impending stardom.

Alabama, as 1 4 % of US pop , receives 1 4 % of available vaccines

Even as DCH Health System expands COVID-19 vaccinations into the 1A plus crowd  adding police, firefighters, and those over 75 to the 1A designation of healthcare workers and those in communal living  it could potentially double the 800 shots it s delivering per week, if more of the Pfizer vaccine doses were available. We have the capacity at DCH to offer many more appointment times than we are currently, said Andy North, DCH vice president of marketing and communications. The appointment book is filled every week through February, and into the first days of March. What we know at this point is as we use up the vaccine, and report back our usage rate, that makes us eligible to get more vaccine, if there is any, North said.

UA superfan Tommy Ray keeps streak intact; 49 years long

Back in mid-September, just before the truncated 2020 college football season kicked off, Crimson Tide superfan Tommy Ray was still scratching around for tickets. He d landed four of 10 regular season games, but with stadiums at reduced capacities due to COVID-19, the Huntsville native feared that the 20% of usual seats might turn out precious as gold. Connections helped, including friends and University of Alabama officials, ticket brokers and others who want to see Tommy and Sarah Ray up in the stands, where they ve been for several decades. Despite never possessing season tickets, Ray s cheered on more than 600 consecutive Alabama football games, not missing a bowl, playoff or championship since early 1972. His wife Sarah has seen hundreds, as well, including every one since Nick Saban arrived in 2007.

Longtime Tuscaloosa business and civic leader Jim Flemming dies

Though the image of businesspeople can suffer tarnish at the holidays, it s important to remember Kris Kringle won that trial against Macy s, moneylender Scrooge changed his evil ways, and in It s a Wonderful Life, the symbol of charity and decency played by small-town banker Jimmy Stewart defeated greed and rancor, by virtue of his relationships becoming the richest man in town. James Benjamin Flemming, Jr., known as Jim, died Thursday Dec. 31, 2020 at DCH Regional Medical Center, after a lifetime successfully blending business and civic engagement, seeing professional and charitable work as inextricably intertwined. He was definitely more George Bailey than Old Man Potter, laughed Mark Sullivan, who succeeded Flemming as president and CEO of Bank of Tuscaloosa.
