CANTON TWP. A couple picnic shelter pavilions and a concrete slab likely make for a drab impression at Faircrest Park.
But with the help of $250,000 in state funding, the township park is on the verge of receiving a facelift. The fresh look will include a new covered pavilion, a stage with a hood over it for performances and a veterans memorial area with a display featuring flags of the military armed forces.
Faircrest Park, located in the 1000 block of Faircrest Street SW, lacks indoor plumbing now for restrooms and running water. We want it to be a nicer place for people to go, township Trustee Christopher Nichols said. The restrooms are really important when we have Community Day. We have events in the park. The park is surprisingly well used, especially in the summer. We just want to take it to the next level.
Lending a helping hand, San Diego Zoo Global researchers stationed in the Land Down Under provided relief for koalas whose homes were devastated in the blaze. One member of their koala search and recovery team was Smudge, an adorable pooch who had a nose for sniffing out the marsupials.
Smudge used his remarkable sense of scent to aid his human counterparts in locating koalas, who were then rescued from the fires and placed into safety.

CANTON TWP. Township officials are looking to pay $8,500 to the Ohio Fire Chiefs Association to assist in the selection of a new fire chief.
Richard Morabito has been acting chief of the Fire Department since the departure of Christopher Smith, who accepted a job in Alaska earlier this year. We are spending some money on some professionals to help in the search, Trustee Christopher Nichols said. They are a little more qualified at it than we are.
The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, according to its web site, provides a profile of the qualifications for the vacant position, including a description of required skills.
